Comm Instr RW to ASEL Private Medical Cert

I have a current 3rd class med cert and am being told I need to go buy a student pilot cert. Does anyone know if that is a waste of money, shouldn't my endorsement for solo be annotated in my logbook instead of the back of the medical cert. since I already have Comm/Instrument Helicopter FAA License, current medical cert. and a logbook? Thanks for any help with this.

    You are correct.   You will never be a Student Pilot again, as far as the FAA is concerned.  If you want to solo an airplane, you need an endorsement to act as pilot in command for a category in which you are not rated, as stated in 61.31(d):
     
    d) Aircraft category, class, and type ratings: Limitations on operating an aircraft as the pilot in command. To serve as the pilot in command of an aircraft, a person must—
    (1) Hold the appropriate category, class, and type rating (if a class or type rating is required) for the aircraft to be flown; or
    (2) Have received training required by this part that is appropriate to the pilot certification level, aircraft category, class, and type rating (if a class or type rating is required) for the aircraft to be flown, and have received an endorsement for solo flight in that aircraft from an authorized instructor.
