Is it legal to use electronic charts and approch plates without having any paper copys on board?

    The short answer is:

    Yes, you can legally use electronic charts and approach plates without having to carry paper on board IF you operate under Part 91 rules as most of general aviation does.

    If you are a Part 119, 121, 135 or certain subpart of 91(f&k), then you can with approval from your principal operating inspector (POI) and determining that your EFB (electronic flight bag) meets the requirements of certain advisory circulars and job aids that the FAA has distributed.

    Note that under Part 91, there is no explicit requirement to carry charts at all, so an electronic chart certainly meets that non-existent requirement.
