Flight Following

Asked by: 7424 views
FAA Regulations, General Aviation

Can I request flight following without giving a specific destination? For example, if I just want to go VFR on a sight seeing trip can I get flight following? I understand ATC only gives FF on an as time available basis.

Thanks

The short answer is yes.  If you explain (briefly) what you want to do, you can have flight following with the destination the same as your departure airport.

Absolutely. Just give them an altitude, or grouping of altitudes you’ll be operating in and a general location. Two examples:

    1) When I did photo flights over NYC for traffic survey I told them I’d be flying a continuous circle over the bridges surrounding NYC at 12,500 feet.

    2) When I asked for it during flight training lessons I’d tell them I was maneuvering between three and six and would remain withing 5 miles of my current location.

As you can see from the examples it is just like flight following to a destination, except you give no destination. Instead just an altitude and relative location to where you wish to maneuver.
