I was on an IFR flight plan under air traffic control. 40 miles from my destination, an uncontrolled airport with instrument approaches, the controller asked me if I had the one minute weather and what my approach request was. I did - the weather was 10 miles visibility with 4,000 foot ceilings and that the visual approach should be acceptable.
I finally got down to ~3,000 feet about 8 miles out and canceled IFR. I could see the airport at least 10 miles out. I rechecked the ATIS to confirm the winds and the visibility was now 2 1/2 miles in heavy rain. But I could still see the airport from 6 miles!
So I was on the straight in for the 45 degree leg for the left downwind. I landed without incident - no rain - visibility was always AT LEAST 5 miles, probably 10. After turning out on the taxiway, the ATIS visibility was 3 miles, but again, was 5-10 in reality.
Did I break any regs? Since the airport was technically IMC, I landed under VFR. But I was able to maintain perfect site of the airport at all times, so I was truly able to complete the visual approach.
Or am I just too paranoid?
Robert
