Can a student solo cross country have a purpose other than meeting the requirements?

Asked by: 806 views FAA Regulations, Student Pilot

My student wants to fly solo cross country to pick up his dog, which is currently with friends. Anyone know if such a flight is prohibited by the regs? Ignore for now the question of whether it's a wise choice or not. I'm looking for regulatory parameters.

Read 61.89. I do not see this flight as fitting into any of the prohibited operations.

    Assuming:
He isn’t being paid to pick up the dog.
Somebody isn’t paying to have the dog transported.
This flight isn’t part of a business endeavor.

I stopped and spent a few hours visiting friends.
