Max flight times for commercial operators

Asked by: 695 views Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations

  • If you are a commercial pilot for a 121 carrier and also do part 91 flying on the side such as 91 commercial flying for a private operator, or even just flight instruction, do those hours count towards the flight time limitations set forth in part 121?

    Yes.

§ 121.489 Flight time limitations: Other commercial flying.

No pilot that is employed as a pilot by a certificate holder conducting flag operations may do any other commercial flying if that commercial flying plus his flying in air transportation will exceed any flight time limitation in this part.

However, you can do a whole lot of things including commute in from the other side of the country so that you are dead tired when you show up for the day’s flying and be legal as far as duty time is concerned. The Colgan crash in 2009 was a good example of the risk.
