Do I need to take CFI again if I have AGI?

Asked by: 1501 views , ,
FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

I am looking into getting Initial CFI.

I have AGI and since then, my CFI, FOI exams expired (over 24 months) by a month.

I understand that under §61.183 I do not need to take FOI exam again. My question is do I need to take CFI exam again since it expired?

AGI exam is almost identical to AGI exam.

Under 61.183(e), you have to pass the FOI knowledge test unless (1) you already hold a flight or ground instructor certificate. You already have the AGI, so you don’t need the FOI (again).

Under 61.183(f), you have to pass the knowledge test appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought. Unlike 61.183(e), there is no “unless” on the requirement for that test.

So yes, you will need to take another knowledge test to be eligible for the practical test. Just make sure you get the right one using the FAA’s knowledge testing matrix: https://www.faa.gov/training_testing/testing/media/testing_matrix.pdf
