Logging instruction given

Asked by: 1628 views Flight Instructor

I just got my Flight Instructor Certificate and I’m just wondering how you would recommend logging flight and ground instruction given in my log book. For flight instruction, should I write pretty much the same as I would in the students log book, but instead of writing the flight time under “dual,” write it under a blank column and title it “dual given?” For the the ground instruction, should I just log it somewhere else such as a spreadsheet or should I put it in my ground section?

Yes, if your logbook does not already have a “Dual Given”, “CFI”, “Instruction Given” or other similar column, create your own and use that.

As for remarks for flight instruction, all I put in my logbook is the trainee’s name. That’s it.

I have separate records of what we did on that flight. For me, it’s usually just a spreadsheet, but for others it could be more formal training records. Or it could be a notebook for each trainee. Whatever works for you, the main idea is to make sure that when the trainee takes a 3 week break, you can remember what you did last time.

Ground instruction is just entered into the same spreadsheet/training records as flight instruction. It doesn’t go anywhere in my logbook.

You did not ask, but you can log dual given as both dual given and PIC. The FAA did a notice on that some years ago and then added, but that the total flight time is still just the time flown, not twice as much time.
