VOT Check While Airborne

Asked by: 2017 views
FAA Regulations

Can I use a VOT for a VOR check if I'm airborne? There doesn't seem to be any published information on the service volume or azimuths/distances from the VOT where the signal isn't reliable. But for my home airport of KMYF, the chart supplement says the VOT is only valid in the run-up area for 28R and 28L.

The following is a quote from FAA Order 6050.32B; Spectrum Management Regulations and Procedures Manual:

    41. FREQUENCY ENGINEERING FOR VOT TEST FACILITIES. A VOT is provided to give the pilot an opportunity to check the aircraft’s VOR avionics on the ground before a flight. Frequency protection for VOTs is not provided in the air.

The following is a quote from the AIM:

    1-1-4. VOR Receiver Check

    a. The FAA VOR test facility (VOT) transmits a test signal which provides users a convenient means to determine the operational status and accuracy of a VOR receiver while on the ground where a VOT is located. The airborne use of VOT is permitted; however, its use is strictly limited to those areas/altitudes specifically authorized in the Chart Supplement U.S. or appropriate supplement.
