Dui conviction

Asked by: 1239 views Private Pilot

Hello.  I have 2 prior dui convictions and I'm having a difficult time finding an answer.  Is it possible to obtain a private pilot license in my situation.  I have done what the court has told me (inpatient rehab, counseling etc).  If it is possible is there something I must do that the FAA will most likely ask for?

The sticking point will be the medical certificate. Two DUI’s is a bad number. If your BAC was just over the line, that is one thing, if you BAC was approaching twice the legal limit, that is another thing. It depends on a lot of variables.

Probably the best thing to do is to join AOPA and ask the question of their medical people once you are a member.

Don’t give up, but do be prepared to deal with a lot of frustration. It will require documentation and patience. Above all else, just tell the truth.

The FAA will ask for a lot. There will be records to produce and forms to fill out. My suggestion is to find a senior AME who works with drug and alcohol issues (one who does HIMS work is best for this) and arrange a *consultation*. They will be in the best position to tell you your chances, explain the process, help you through collecting the information the FAA needs to see, and package it in the best way.
