What qualifies as TAA?

Asked by: 6224 views Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations

I recently have had a Commercial applicant fall into my lap as an instructor and I'm afraid I have steered him the wrong way. We have a have a C-182 in our school which has a Garmin 430 and 530 in it as well as a 3 axis auto pilot. I thought " well there's a moving map and 3 axis so it qualifies as TAA". At closer look at the Reg, its also gotta have a PFD and MFD display....correct? We have another C-182 3 axis AP that has the Garmin 650 and 2 gtx (100?) in place of the vacuum powered instruments. Would that qualify?

    This comes from 5-1668 of FAA Order 8900.1:

    S. Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA). A general aviation (GA) aircraft that contains a global positioning system (GPS) navigator with a moving map display, plus any additional systems. Traditional systems such as autopilots are included when combined with GPS navigators. This includes aircraft used in both VFR and IFR operations, with systems certified to either VFR or IFR standards.

    KDS, that answer is not complete for Commercial applicants.

    Mackey, the requirements are in 61.129j:

    ——-

    (j) Technically advanced airplane. Unless otherwise authorized by the Administrator, a technically advanced airplane must be equipped with an electronically advanced avionics system that includes the following installed components:

    (1) An electronic Primary Flight Display (PFD) that includes, at a minimum, an airspeed indicator, turn coordinator, attitude indicator, heading indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator;

    (2) An electronic Multifunction Display (MFD) that includes, at a minimum, a moving map using Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation with the aircraft position displayed;

    (3) A two axis autopilot integrated with the navigation and heading guidance system; and

    (4) The display elements described in paragraphs (j)(1) and (2) of this section must be continuously visible.
    ——-

    530/430, a PFD, and a two-axis “intergrated” autopilot are needed to meet the definition of TAA for Commercial applicant experience purposes.
