“With no flags”

Asked by: 1501 views General Aviation

"the attitude indictor should indicate pitch and
roll level (depending on airplane attitude) with no flags; the
altimeter should indicate the proper elevation within prescribed
limits; the turn indictor should show the correct direction of
turn with the ball movement toward the outside of the turn
with no flags;"

I'm sure this will be the most obvious thing and I can already deduce what it means, but can someone explain the "with no flags" / what a flag is?

“Flags” in this case means “warning” flags, such as may appear on some instruments when they are either unpowered (electrical or vacuum), broken, or not receiving a signal. Not all attitude indicators have these. Most turn coordinators I’ve seen do.

Here is an example of an attitude indicator with warning flag.

    And a turn coordinator:

The flag is a small window on the face of the instrument that turns red if power is not available to the gyro. It means the gyro is not working and the turn indicator should not be trusted.
