I’m about to purchase a foreFlight subscription do you know if I purchase the basic subscription for $ 99.00 do I get the moving map on my iPad when I’m flying or do I need a different subscription. I’m new to all of this si please any suggestions will be appreciated. Also I’m going to Lodi California to do my CFI rating, does any body have done any training with them is a fast track program, or any suggestions on where to go and do the Rating. Thanks

    Yes you get the moving map with your position (“own ship”) depicted. That’s is basic to all of the EFB apps out there.

    However, to have your own ship position shown on the map, you need a GPS position source. On the iPad, you need to purchase a version that has cellular support to have the GPS built in. The wifi only versions will need an external GPS position source. I recommend you purchase the cellular version to get the GPS source built in, and if you subscribe to the cellular service, usually cheap (mine is a $10 per month subscription with Verizon), you can also obtain weather and file flight plans from the iPad without being near a wifi. Some pilot’s just buy the wifi version of the iPad and tether it to their iPhone for cellular and purchase a separate GPS source. Many portable GPS sources with ADS-B weather and traffic receivers are supported by ForeFlight. A popular one sold thru ForeFlight is the Sentry. You can also build your own, search on Stratux.
