Report 2 mile base

Asked by: 1503 views Private Pilot

Today I flew into a class D airport and was going directly to it with a heading of 230. I was northeast of the airport, about 10 miles aw ay. The active runway was 23 and the controller told me to report a 2 mile right base for 23. Does this mean that I don't have to enter the traffic pattern from the 45, fly the downwind and extend the base leg 2 miles? Could I have just turned to enter the base leg and than to final and skip the down wind leg? Thanks for the help. Best.

In this case, you would not be expected to fly the 45 to the downwind and then the base leg. I would position the flight path to directly join a base leg followed by a turn to final and report 2 mile base when 2 NM from the threshold.
