Where is the LNAV MDA MAP for the RNAV (GPS) Y RWY 16R approach into KPAE

Asked by: 2096 views Instrument Rating

The dashed line for the MAP does not start at the runway threshold, leading me to believe the MAP is before the RW16R waypoint.

Good question. The MAWP is named RW16R and is designated as a flyover waypoint on the planview. That would make it the LNAV MAP. The profile view does show the missed approach path beginning before RW16R. This illustrates where the LPV DA would occur. The LPV DA will occur where the 3 degree glidepath is 200’ AGL and is located about 2/3 nm before the threshold.

The LNAV MAP is charted at the threshold. The bold horizontal line is the runway, and at the end of the runway there is a vertical line with the label RW16R above the vertical and shown to be 1.1 NM past the VDP point and another 3.2 NM past ITIPE, the FAF. The bolded dotted missed approach path is an artist rendering of the vertical path for one of the vertically guided DA and doesn’t represent a MAP. The Jeppesen charts depict three pull up arrows, the LNAV/VNAV one first, then the lower LPV one, and finally after the threshold, the LNAV pull up at the runway. Also the LNAV vertical path is shown as a separate level off at the VDA and to the RWY 16R threshold. It is all artistic licence.
