8710 Landings

Question about Night Landings for filling out the 8710 on IACRA.  How do you fill out Night Take-Off / Landings on the online form if you have different numbers.  For example, if I have 13 take offs and 29 landings at night.  The electronic form will only accept a number no slash. Just go with the 13?  Same with the PIC question?

Good question and I’ll have to give you a bit of a weasel answer. You only have to put what you need. It’s nice to put what you have in case you later lose your logbook, but it’s not required. Therefore, you could just put 13 in there and let it go at that.

However, you can also call the IACRA Help Desk at 1-844-322-6948 or send an e-mail to helpdesk@faa.gov. Do this well in advance of when you need to know the answer because I’ve seen their callback time to be ridiculously long.

Do us a favor. If you get the answer, share it with us.

KDS, that’s not a weasel answer at all. It’s realistic.

Bottom line is, the only reasons to log night landings (or any landings for that matter) are (a) passenger currency, and (b) to meet specific requirements for a certificate, rating, or privilege, such as the commercial requirement for 10 solo night takeoffs and landings. In the case of the IACRA 8710, the only important reason is (b).

Note also, that every one of those, require a takeoff and a landing. That being the case, unless I perform both a takeoff and a landing during a flight, I don’t bother to log it at all.
