Rusty pilot–BasicMed question

Asked by: 1764 views
FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Private Pilot

I'm a rusty pilot, looking to get current again.  BasicMed has been implemented since I last flew.

The date of my last medical (3rd class) is January 2005 at which time I was 35 years old. If my memory and calculations are correct, this means my medical was valid as of July 14, 2006 and I am therefore eligible for BasicMed. Is that correct?

If eligible, I need to take a BasicMed education course and get a physical using the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist and I'm ready to go?

Thanks!

Richard

    Yup, get your form filled out by the Physician, then go online and take the BasicMed education course via AOPA, answer all the questions they ask. Print your Certificate that shows you took the online course. Then keep the following three documents with you when you go flying: 1. 3rd class medical certificate. 2. The online course certificate. 3. Physician form. Keep all 3 of those with you when you go fly and you’re good to go.

    The online course is only good for 2 years (and to the specific date, not 24 calendar months). The physician form is good for 48 calendar months.

    Based on the wording of the regulation 61.23, you held a medical certificate issued under part 67 until Jan 31, 2010 and this would meet the requirement to have held a medical certificate issued under part 67 at a point after July 14, 2006.

    CFR 61.23 (i) The person must—
    (A) Comply with all medical requirements or restrictions associated with his or her U.S. driver’s license;
    (B) At any point after July 14, 2006, have held a medical certificate issued under part 67 of this chapter;
