Logging PIC time in single pilot aircraft requiring a type rating

Asked by: 2207 views FAA Regulations

Is a C525 SIC rating sufficient to  log PIC as the sole manipulator of the controls of a single pilot certified  Citation Jet in Part 91-Operation? 61.51 says the pilot must be "rated".

No, you cannot log PIC time with only an SIC type rating. See the Morgan interpretation:

Further, take a look at the Scott Nichols interpretation:

    https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/agc/practice_areas/regulations/interpretations/data/interps/2009/nichols%20-%20(2009)%20legal%20interpretation.pdf

In Part 91 operations, if the PIC has the single pilot type rating, you may occupy the seat and perform pilot functions, but you would not be a required crewmember and cannot log SIC time.

    No.

The FAA Chief Counsel’s office has said on a number of occasions, most recently in a 2014 letter to Judd Cato, “to log PIC time under §61.51(e)(1)(i), a pilot must hold a type rating that is not subject to a “SIC Privileges Only” limitation.”

The “SIC rating” is a limited use certification, primarily created to meet international, not US, regulations.

No. You can not. Even when I do type rating instruction with student in left seat manipulating controls for entire flight, they can not log it as pic time.
