Instructing a pre solo student

Asked by: 1642 views Student Pilot

As a CFI, can I flight instruct a new (pre-solo) student who has not yet obtained a student pilot certificate? I understand he has to have a medical to solo.

Thanks

Of course you may instruct him. He not only needs a medical to solo, he also needs a student pilot certificate. Your student can apply for the Student Pilot certificate and you, his instructor, can process the application. Enter the application in IACRA.

I’d suggest they get both the medical and student pilot certificate processed ASAP just so that those are not delaying your flying, solo, etc. Could take up to 3 weeks or so to get the plastic copy and you NEED that to solo.

Good advice to get the certificates as soon as possible, especially if you might have a medical condition to deal with. However, one does not need the plastic certificate to solo. A paper temporary student pilot certificate can be printed from IACRA. This was part of the fix to allow students to solo on their 14th or 16th birthday.
