What does this symbol mean?

Asked by: 2505 views Airspace, Instrument Rating

I was in flight review and the question of what is the magenta line running from FIS to MTH on the Miami sectional; B 646.  Since it ran from a NBD, my answer was an LMF Airway.

The answer was it is a Miscellaneous Air Route.  Of course the legend for Miami section is of no help.  The FAA Aeronautical Chart gets me close, but really doesn't reference any line starting with the letter B or G for that matter.

I know it is a bit of 'potatoe' / 'potato' topic, but now just really curious.

B646, or Blue 646, is a Low/Medium Frequency (L/MF) airway using NDBs, which allows IFR operations, with a MEA of 2,000. Using VOR nav and flying airway V3, you would be well over water, and face a initial MEA of 15,000 to avoid the radar balloon (R2916). The kink in B646 keeps you well clear of the radar balloon. A better example of a “Miscellaneous Airway” might be AR-5 (Atlantic Route 5) off of the NDB JA, near KJAX, which leads you out into the Atlantic and just end at Longitude W77.000. If you look in the FAA VFR Chart User’s Guide, page 28, you’ll see the various airway designators.

Also, gotta consider your routing when the intersection where V3 turn north is named “DROWN”!
