Towered Airport IFR to VFR

Quick question, if I'm at a towered airport that is under IFR conditions and the actual weather changes to VMC (as in a front passes) , do you have to wait until the METAR updates to reflect the VFR conditions to depart VFR?

    The tower knows the field status. They won’t clear you for takeoff into IMC unless you have an IFR clearance or Special VFR.
