Can I log PIC time: FAR 61.51

Asked by: 409 views ,
Private Pilot

It says:

(e) Logging pilot-in-command flight time. (1) A sport, recreational, private, commercial, or airline transport pilot may log pilot in command flight time for flights-

(i) When the pilot is the sole manipulator of the controls of an aircraft for which the pilot is rated, or has sport pilot privileges for that category and class of aircraft, if the aircraft class rating is appropriate;

I hold an ASEL Private pilot certificate. I do not hold complex or high performance endorsements. If my friend (who holds holds complex and high performance endorsements) allows me to be sole manipulator of the controls on his Beechcraft Bonanza (a complex, high performance airplane), can I log PIC time?

    Yes, endorsements are not ratings.

    What Kris wrote is correct. Stated differently; if I can’t tell by looking at your pilot certificate alone that you were not qualified to act as the PIC, then you can indeed legally log PIC time for that time when you were the sole manipulator of the controls. Conventional gear is another example where you could log the time as PIC even though you didn’t have a corresponding endorsement.

    Thanks! Just logged my first 1.8 complex/high performance in the Comanche!
