A good place to read is Chapter 9 of PLANE SENSE.
    You can buy one here:

You can read one online here:

The short answer to your question is there are two kinds; Normal and Emergency.

Somebody discovers something is wrong with an aircraft. If the manufacturer is concerned, they will issue a Service Bulletin. All 135 and 121 operators have to comply with all service bulletins. If the FAA is concerned enough, they will issue an Airworthiness Directive. Everyone has to comply with airworthiness directives. It’s possible that after it is initially issued, that it will be discovered that it could have been done better or by an alternate method. In that case, a revision to the AD may be issued. The revision must also be complied with. So, sometimes people will mistakenly think their AD’s have all been complied with and be unaware that a later revision of one of the AD’s has not been complied with.

If you read Chapters 7 through 10 of PLANE SENSE, you’ll know far more about the subject of maintenance than the majority of pilots.

Without having looked up your reference, I would have replied that the two types of ADs are a) one time ADs and b) recurring ADs.

This is more of a functional description. One must comply with an AD whether it is Emergency or Normal.

I am more interested in whether or not I need to keep repeating a procedure every so many hours of operation or periodically based on the calendar.
