Medical Certificate Question

Asked by: 2390 views
Student Pilot

I have a circulation issue that has caused me to get blood clots in my legs in the past. One of the clots led to an amputation of my right leg below the knee. Will this prevent me from flying? Will this be an issue with getting the medical certificate?

I would ask Dr. Bruce Chien. He is a senior AME and handles tough cases. He can be reached at http://www.aeromedicaldoc.com/startpagina.html

He will know the answer to your question, be it good or bad.

There are many pilots flying with a prosthesis. That should not be an issue. You will need to take a medical flight test. Go to website fsims.faa.gov

In the search box type the word “medical”. In the results, look for Volume 5, Chapter 8, Section 1. It deals with medical flight tests. Look at paragraph 5-1526 E 3 on page 7. It outlines what you must do on the test.

The other issue would be the clots. If you are taking blood thinners or any other medication for the clots, that would need to be an approved medication.

    Good luck
