Can you fly IFR w/o Mode C?

Asked by: 2498 views General Aviation

This topic was previously discussed on this website: (http://www.askacfi.com/16014/mode-c-for-checkride.htm)

If I'm understanding John correctly in that post, IR can be flown without the Mode C capability as long as we stay outside A, B, and C airspaces. I'm wondering, if any, what other restrictions there are when flying IR without Mode C. I recall my instructor once told me that if Mode C is lost during instrument flight, I would have to report on every mandatory reporting point. Is that true? And what might be other restrictions?

Transponder requirements are found in 91.215. They apply to airspace requirements, not the flight rules under which the flight is conducted. There are exceptions that permit flight in airspace where transponder and mode C are required, that permit flight in the airspace without a transponder or mode C.
