Class D airspace lateral limit/radius

As I've been revising my aviation study documents, one thing I came across that I didn't know the source of is the "typical" radius of class D airspace around an airport being 4.4 NM/5 SM.  It's something that's been in my head since I started getting into aviation over 20 years ago.  However, the only written source I can find with that number for a radius is my old private pilot ground school notebook, so it's something the instructor said when talking about class D.  Since that number is not stated in the text book for that class I don't know where the instructor got that number.  The only other print sources I could find that listed any sort of typical/normal lateral limits of class D are my Gleim IFR written exam test prep book (1996 edition) and the course book for the King instrument rating video series (also from around 1996), and they both specify 4 NM, not 4.4.  On the videotape they say the same thing but note that the only reason we're being told it's 4 NM is because that's what's asked on the test (which explains why it's in both of those books).  I'm figuring that perhaps the 4 NM mentioned by those two sources and why that's the answer on the test is related to the 4 NM radius for the speed limit in 91.117 b.

 

The only source I can find that supports the 4.4 NM typical radius around a class D airport is from CFInotebook.net which states, "Class D areas are tailored to the area, but 5 SM (4.4 NM) standard radius surrounding those airports that have an operational control tower."  However, I can't find what source the author of that page would have gotten that number from.

 

Every other source I can find lists nothing for a normal/typical class D airspace radius, and at most says each one is specifically designed for the local requirements.  And that's understandable, since a plotter on a chart shows a range of different sizes and FAA order 7400.11A.  Some airports do measure 4.4 NM in their class D airspace radius but that doesn't seem to be the majority.

 

So my question is, is there any source in FAA publications or text books that specifically states a 4.4 NM radius as being somewhat typical for class D airspace?  (Not including any class D or E extensions for approaches, of course.)  Or is this something I should take out of my study documents as too irrelevant to bother with?

    In my opinion, I’d just drop it. If 4.4nm/5sm ever WAS the actual rule (and I remember seeing similar references throughout my training too), it has long past been overrun by the exceptions, to the point where discussing any sort of “typical size” at this point is silly.

    You look through 7400.11A (I wonder how many people actually know about that one) and you see far more Class D’s that are NOT 4.4 nm than ones that are.

    If I was creating study material on this topic, I would just state something like “Class D’s are generally about a 4-5 nm radius around the airport, but this is tailored for local needs.” There are numerous examples in the 2’s and some that are much larger, up to 6 (KPRC) and 7 miles (KEDW) – maybe even some that are larger.

    Take this with a grain of salt, but I think I remember reading somewhere, years ago, that there was a ratio of the length of the main runway to the width of the Class D.

    This goes back to the days before Class A, B, C, D, E & G

    Prior to that there was Positive Control Airspace (A), TCAs (B), ARSAs (C) Control zones and Airport Traffic Areas (D), other controlled airspace (E) and uncontrolled airspace (G).

    Prior to that, there were no TCAs or ARSAs. On my 1970 Chicago sectional (1st edition) O’Hare only showed the dashed blue line representing a Control Zone.

    The Control Zone was whatever size and configuration needed to accommodate instrument approaches and was depicted using dashed blue lines. The Airport Traffic Area was not depicted on charts but was an area of 5 statute miles radius and up to but not including 3000′ above an airport with a control tower. One needed to be in contact with the control tower prior to entering the Airport Traffic Area.

    The radius of the Class D is determined by the formula found in JO 7400.2. J is the current version. It is designed to:

    “Contain IFR arrival operations while between the surface and 1,000 feet above the surface and IFR departure operations while between the surface and the base of adjacent controlled airspace.”

    JO 7400.9W lists all of the Class D airspace. Looking through the pdf I find the radius anywhere from 4 sm to 6.6 sm.

    JO 7400.9Z appears to be the current version, effective date September 15, 2015.

    The radius is stated in Nautical miles, not Statute miles per the statement on page A-2.

    I am familiar with the Bloomington, IL airport which has a class D area with a radius of 8 SM (7NM as shown in the Order). There may be some in the country with a larger radius that I am not aware of.

    First, I agree with comments above that you should not waste a lot of time on the specifics of Class D dimensions.

    Second, in case you just can’t let go of it, it appears that the current governing FAA doc is actually “ORDER JO 7400.11” dated August 3, 2016. with a subject of “Airspace Designations and Reporting Points” Within 7400.11 you can find listings of specific airspace designations, including Class D’s for the country. In Subpart D – Class D Airspace, Section 5000,… “General. The Class D airspace areas listed below consist of specified airspace within which all aircraftoperators are subject to operating rules and equipment requirements of Part 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (see 14 CFR 91.129). Each Class D airspace area designated for an airport in this subpart contains at least one primary airport around which the airspace is designated.”

    Also, note that all mileage references in the doc are in nautical miles.

    Old orders are still on the FAA website and when you do a Google search, the most recent one doesn’t always appear on the first page of search results. However, I think I figured out how to find the most recent version of FAA orders. Go to this page and search for the order.

    Dave, you’re right that it’s a ratio, but rather than having to do with the length of the runway it has to do with reaching 700′ class E airspace using a standard climb gradient from a central point on the airport. It’s in FAA Order 7400.2K chapter 17 section 2.

    Thanks all for your responses to this question. It seems if there ever was a 4.4 NM standard radius, that’s an antiquated piece of information that I can let go of due to the range of class D sizes out there.

    Class D radius is based off the longest runway, plus overrun if stressed and available on each end for roll out, divided by 1 nm in feet (6,076′) plus the distance it takes to reach 700 AGL using a standard climb gradient of 200 ft/nm.

    700’/200 = 3.5nm

    Ex:
    Runway Length (D) = 6,000
    Class D radius (r)
    r = 6,000/6,076 + 3.5 =~ 4.5 nm

    The class 700′ class E airspace likewise is calculated in the additional distance needed to climb from 700′ to 1200′ at 200 ft/nm.

    (1200-700)/200 = 2.5 nm

    Ex:
    Runway Length (D) = 6,000
    Class E radius (r)
    r = 6,000/6,076 +3.5 +2.5 =~ 7 nm
