Which side of the hold is protected? The inbound and outbound leg both of them protected?

    The entire holding pattern is protected airspace for both obstacles and other air traffic. The buffer is far more than most training airplanes ever use – it’s literally miles of extra space at typical trainer-aircraft holding speeds.

    There is a little less protected airspace on the non-holding side (the left side of the course when inbound to the fix in a standard right-hand pattern), but it’s still measured in miles.
