How to figure out approach course

Asked by: 1958 views Instrument Rating

KART VOR RWY 7

Question 1

Coming from the SYR VOR and turning at WUMSO intersection I would have a course of 053 on the 233 radial.  Do I still have the final approach course of 043 tuned in the OBI the entire time and intercept it, or do I keep the R223 radial tuned in and retune to 043 after crossing the VOR?

Question 2

If I'm coming from the South and want to use the ART  VOR as my IAF, how do I turn after crossing the VOR to get on the outbound for the procedure turn?

I’m not sure I understand your first question. Using SYR as the IAF, the approach is pretty straight-forward. One would fly to WUMSO on the SYR 010 radial. With dual VORs, one would be tuned to the SYR 010 and the other to the ART 053 to identify WUMSO. On reaching WUMSO, one would turn to intercept the ART 053 and fly that course until reaching ART, at which point one would twist the OBS to 043 and turn for the final approach course. That’s what the chart tells you to do.

On your second question, are you asking whether to turn left or right upon reaching ART? Doesn’t really matter. Some folks would choose the “protected side” where the missed approach hold and the PT are located, but that’s not necessary. Others would choose to make the shortest turn.

Btw, references to ART 053 mean a 053 TO indication on the 233 radial.
