Instructor required certificates

Flight Instructor

I am a CFI and recently lost my commercial certificate. I am going to ask for a replacement but in the mean time am trying to determine if I can still provide flight instruction while carrying my private pilot certificate and instructor certificate. I have been looking in 61.3 regs to answer my question but haven't found a clear answer. It seems a commercial certificate is required since I am receiving payment a PIC but am hoping this is not the case. Anyways, this is a good opportunity to brush up on the regs. What FARS answer my question?

Your examiner didn’t cut up or put a hole punch through the seal on your private certificate after your commercial check ride? That makes it invalid. Anyway, the cfi certificate says “valid only when accompanied by pilot certificate no. 1234567.” I think that answers your question. To me you don’t have a valid pilot certificate, and you shouldn’t fly at all let alone instruct. That actually happened to me after I passed my instrument check ride. I washed the paper temporary certificate. The private certificate was no longer valid, so I couldn’t fly solo until I received the new certificate in the mail.

Log in to Airmen Online Services (link below) and use the “Request Temporary Authority to
Exercise Certificate Privileges.” link to generate a temporary authorization. It’s created within seconds and emailed to you.

Print if off and away you go while waiting for the replacement.

I forgot to add, you can request your replacement there as well. You pay online and they will mail it out to you.

And for those that might run into the situation Nascr1Arrival did, contact the examiner that did your checkride and they can issue you a new temporary.
