VFR flight Following

Asked by: 3691 views Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor, General Aviation, Instrument Rating

Does anyone know where I can look up for VFR flight following in FAR/AIM or any other source?

I tried my best and could not find relevant information in Chapter 4 of AIM and anywhere else.

Thank you,

Steve.

The Transport Canada Aeronautical Information Manual, calls it “en route radar surveillance.” Although most pilots AND controllers prefer to call it \”flight following\”.

    RAC 5.7:
\”When operating in areas where radar coverage exists, VFR flights with transponder equipped aircraft may request radar traffic information. ATC will provide this information, traffic (or workload) permitting.

The service is provided by the ACC or TCU responsible for IFR control service in the area(s) concerned. The appropriate frequency for the controlling ATC unit may be found in the CFS (nearest controlled airport), en route (IFR) charts or by request to a FIC.

    Phraseology: “REQUEST RADAR SURVEILLANCE”

    Example:
“EDMONTON ADVISORY, CESSNA SKYLANE FOXTROT ALPHA BRAVO CHARLIE, TEN NORTHEAST OF CAMROSE AT 6500 VFR SQUAWKING 1200 EN ROUTE TO VILLENEUVE; REQUEST RADAR SURVEILLANCE.”\”

Look at AIM 4-1-15. Radar Traffic Information Service.

“Flight Following” and “VFR Advisories” are common terms for this used by both pilots and ATC but this is the more formal name for the service.
