ATC COmmunicarion Relay station

Asked by: 2501 views Airspace, Commercial Pilot, Flight Instructor, General Aviation, Instrument Rating, Private Pilot, Student Pilot

Hey, I have been studying loss of communication for IFR opes, amd found out that I may hear aircrafts on same frequency is audible but nit the atc transmission.

I can recall partially from my class that there are relay stations but I still need credible sources I can go over and study.

The only relay stations I can think of are remote communications outlets (RCOs). They are located at some airports and also some off-airport sites typically for communicating with ARTCC, such as for getting an IFR clearance on the ground at an uncontrolled field. If you’re having trouble receiving ATC from the air and there’s an RCO nearby you could try using that frequency. But keep in mind that if it’s a physical problem with your radio system–bad wire to the antenna, something fried in the signal gain circuitry in the radio, etc.–you may not be able to receive ATC from the RCO either. If you can communicate with other aircraft on the frequency you could try asking them to relay messages for you and ATC, but keep that to a minimum because they have their own things to deal with. Otherwise, squawk 7600 and proceed on course to your destination.
