Asked by: 2716 views Commercial Pilot

Title 14Chapter ISubchapter DPart 61 Subpart F—COMMERCIAL PILOTS §61.129 lists two X-Country flights which must be done as part of the minimum 20 hours of training.

May I use my PPL night time X-C and my daytime, IFR, X-C training flight to meet these requirements ? Both meet the distance/time criteria.  I've done numerous X-C flights that exceed these minimums, but not with a CFI.  I am presently PPL/IR in SEL

No. The FAA has long taken the position that the training flights done for the commercial certificate are different, at least in terms of the quality and level of knowledge and skill, that what seem to be the same tasks for the private certificate.

It is discussed in a number of FAA sources, one of which is the second part of the 2011 Murphy Interpretation (http://1.usa.gov/1OjN518)
