RVR Details

Asked by: 3235 views FAA Regulations

The A/FD remarks section for KGSO only mentions RVR equipment for runways 5L and 23R. But I do see RVR values for other KGSO runways. How can RVR be determined for the other KGSO runways if only RVR equipment is established for 5L and 23R? Furthermore, RVR is not flight visibility. Flight visibility (slant range) is what is utilized to determine if to land or perform missed approach. Therefore, what good is RVR technology if flight vis. is all that matters regarding the decision of to land or go missed?

I can’t comment on the specifics of that airport, but flight visibility is not all that matters to everyone. And other things, such as RVR, may indeed be what is used to determine if to land or perform missed approach for some operators.

RVR may also be used by some flight crews to determine if an approach can even be attempted.

And RVR is used for other things besides approach and landing. My company has takeoff minimums based on landing and midfield RVR values.

Those facilities are used by folks other than just part 91 operators and will/may have other restrictions/allowances per FARs and/or OpSpecs.
