Instrument currency in a twin-engine

Asked by: 3909 views Commercial Pilot, FAA Regulations, Instrument Rating

I am an instrument rated private pilot, currently working on my commercial-multi at a part 141 flight school. My instrument currency has recently lapsed (2 weeks ago) and I am looking to get recurrent. I was originally planning on getting recurrent in a single engine (which I am rated for) back home, however I was recently told that I will be able to get recurrent in the later part of the commercial course, when shooting approaches in the twin. It was my understanding that I could NOT do this since I cannot log PIC time, as I am not yet rated in a MEL aircraft. However, I was then told that since I will be doing the approaches with a flight instructor, I could log them. If anyone can confirm this, I would appreciate it.

61.57(c) does not require the approaches to be logged while PIC in order to count, it just requires them to be flown and logged. So approaches in training for your MEL are fine.

To answer another possible question, yes, approaches in a twin count for currency in a single, and vice versa. The requirement in 61.57(c) is that they be conducted in an “airplane” and is not class-specific, only category-specific. So approaches in an airplane would NOT count for helicopter currency, for example.
