As a plane ascends, the pressure decreases and there is less oxygen. Does this mean that the pressure INSIDE the plane is GREATER than the pressure on the outside?
When an plane's cabin is pressurized, would it be safe to assume that two things happen:
1.) Compressed air is pumped INTO the plane.
2.) Some of the pressure on the INSIDE of the plane is released to the outside...thus, equalizing the pressure.
Then as the plane descends, pressure on the outside of the plane increases...so pressure is ADDED to the inside of the plane to equalize it again. Is this accurate?
Also, I've heard that if one has a blocked static port or failure, the pilot can crack the veritcal speed indicator and the altimeter and airspeed indicator will behave more normally (?) again. This notion confuses me. If the pressure on the INSIDE of the plane is different from that on the outside (where the static port is located), how does cracking the VSI help the altimeter and airspeed indicator function again? Wouldn't it get a more inaccurate reading?
And why crack the VSI? Why not crack the airspeed indicator or the altimeter if there is a static port malfunction?
