Safety Pilot in LSA

Asked by: 3007 views FAA Regulations, General Aviation, Instrument Rating, Light Sport Aircraft, Private Pilot

Are there any limitations regarding acting as a safety pilot in an LSA as a private pilot? I have zero time in light sport aircraft (all Skyhawk/Cirrus time), but was asked to safety pilot for another private pilot in an LSA.

There might be a requirement to hold a medical certificate since 91.109 requires at least a Private certificate.

I don’t necessarily agree with that idea. Just saying it might be a requirement.

Since you mention you are a private pilot, I will assume you have at least a 3rd class medical certificate. Assuming that to be the case, no problem. All the safety pilot reg [91.109(c)] requires is “at least a private pilot certificate with category and class ratings appropriate to the aircraft being flown.” (Pretty easy reading, huh?)

The medical certificate is required because it’s a private pilot privilege and the FAA considers the safety pilot to be a required crewmember.

Assuming the LSA is a singe-engine airplane, sounds like you qualify.
