Exiting the runway in class B

Asked by: 3036 views General Aviation

When returning to PHNL after a practice session I'll land and make the following call; "Honolulu Tower, cardinal 62-golf can make Delta"... Each time tower has responded "cardinal 62-golf, exit Delta, cross 4 right and contact ground"

Q. What if ATC does not respond to my call? Can I exit or should I just keep taxiing down runway 4 left?

Thanks,

jeff

Read AIM 4–3–20 Exiting the Runway After Landing
The following procedures must be followed after landing and reaching taxi speed.

    a. Exit the runway without delay at the first available taxiway or on a taxiway as instructed by ATC.

There is more, so please take out the book and read the whole thing.

    Fly safe!

In paragraph 4-3-20 of the AIM, it states:

” Exit the runway without delay at the first available taxiway or on a taxiway as instructed by ATC. Pilots must not exit the landing runway onto another runway unless authorized by ATC.”

Technically, you don’t need to make the call you described. You may simply exit at Delta and wait for the tower to either give you instructions to taxi or to contact ground control.

Hi Jeff – looks like I’m a bit late to the party here. Ditto in regards to exiting runway 4L – turn off at the most practical exit and wait further instructions from the tower.

I’m not a CFI btw. I hope your training is going well. PHNL is my home airport. I’m currently in transition training to a fixed gear 177B – maybe I’ll see you on the tarmac sometime!
