Use of the practice area

Asked by: 2779 views Student Pilot

My practice area is just south of  an active military base (Wheeler Army Airfield -PHHI) and a few miles west of Class B Honolulu International  (PHNL).  While entering the practice area my instructer tells me I only need to call PHHI once when entering when they are open.. But when they are closed I should make regular calls to traffic on the CTAF as I perform different maneuvers at different altitudes... This is a very busy practice area...

I prefer to make calls every few minutes and don't get the sense that the controller at the army base is coordinating traffic.

Q1.  Would it be okay to just make regular calls to the tower when they are open to inform them and other traffic what I'm doing...?

Q2. I use the PARC method before each maneuver (Pre-maneuver checklist, area to land, radio call, clearing turn).  Is this too much radio work if the maneuvers are repeated within a short space of time (5 mins)?

thanks

jeff

If your practice area is within the Class D for Wheeler, there is a requirement to stay in contact with the tower.

Best advice in this situation is to do what your instructor tells you. He is familiar with the area and the operations and is in a much better position to advise you.

I understand that my supreme Being is always correct tout at some point I’ll be doing these maneuvers solo… I’ll feel better making regular traffic calls unless there is a good reason not to…

The practice area is south of the class D and so my question is …”should I be making regular traffic calls while maneuvering outside (but near) controlled airspace?”

    Thanks,
    Jeff
