Brand new CFI, can I give instruction with a temp certificate with “Pending” cert. number??

Asked by: 9140 views ,
FAA Regulations, Flight Instructor

Title pretty much says it all. I'm a new CFI, passed the checkride a couple weeks ago, and my certificate hasn't arrived yet. My temp certificate has "pending" for the certificate number. A friend has asked me to give him a BFR. I know my CFI number will just be my normal certificate number with "CFI" on the end, but am I good to give him instruction with that number pending?

Read 61.3 (d) requirement to have your flight instructor certificate with you when you are giving flight instruction, 61.17 regarding temporary certificate duration, and 61.193 Instructor Privileges. Until you receive your flight instructor certificate, you may use your temporary certificate for up to 120 days and give the instruction you are rated to provide as well as sign any endorsements during the interim. I am not aware of any prohibition on using your pilot certificate number on logbook entries or endorsements.

The examiner or inspector who prepared your Temporary certificate has apparently not read Order 8900.1, Volume 5, Chapter 1, Section 5, Paragraph 5-112C.

It deals with the preparation of a Temporary certificate and states that for a Flight Instructor, the number should be entered and should consist of the applicant’s pilot certificate number with the suffix CFI.

When you endorse anyone, use your certificate number + CFI. Don’t put pending.
