Sweept wing causes... A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN EFFECTIVENESS OF FLAPS.

    You are probably asking this question because you have encountered it while studying for the ATP knowledge test. There is a short discussion of this issue in “Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators”. This is where the question comes from. It can be found and downloaded.

    They don’t really answer the question, they just state that the swept wing causes the reduction. I suspect that if you visualize a straight wing with say a third of the wing devoted to the flap and then sweep that wing, you will see a much smaller area of the flap affected by the relative wind as it flows over the wing.
