You should not need another medical, but since your student pilot certificate has expired, you will need a new student pilot certificate. The original solo endorsement on your expired student pilot certificate is still valid and is considered a permanent record, so keep your expired student pilot certificate or you will have to have the current one endorsed.

See AC 61-65E for a reference where it states:

    12. PRESOLO REQUIREMENTS.
    a. The “90-day” solo endorsement that goes in the student pilot’s logbook is required
every 90 days for the student to be afforded continuing solo privileges, per § 61.87(n).
    b. Although § 61.19(b) establishes, in a pertinent part, that a student pilot certificate
expires 24 calendar-months from the month in which it is issued, the endorsements on that
student pilot certificate are a matter of record indefinitely. The endorsements are required to be updated from “time-to-time” in the student pilot’s logbook to retain solo privileges.

Since this was last updated, the student pilot certificate now runs concurrently with the medical duration and may be longer than 24 calendar months.

To obtain a new Student Pilot Certificate, you can contact your local FSDO and get one for free. A designated examiner or an authorized FAA medical examiner can also provide you one, but they may charge you for the service.

The Army medical is OK for third class if it authorizes pilot flight status and if the flight is conducted within U.S. airspace. If you are stationed outside the U.S., you couldn’t use the Army medical.

Since you are using a military medical IAW 61.23(b)(9) I must assume you are a rated pilot in the military, and since you wrote “Army” a helicopter pilot going for fixed wing training? If this is the case I assume you have a commercial RW certificate based upon your military experience.
If the above assumptions are correct then John is not correct and you do NOT need a student pilot certificate as you are not a student pilot but a commercial pilot. You do not receive a 90 day solo endorsement but an endorsement to be PIC in the category and class. There is no time limit on this endorsement unless your instructor specifies one (which would be prudent).
