RVR vs VIS

Can you guys clear up a debate I am having with a friend of mine on the difference between RVR and VIS on a Jeppesen approach chart...  We are looking at a chart and it says:

VIS - 800

RVR - 550

for all 4 approach categories.  Can someone explain the difference?
