when is DME required on an ils approach?
Wes Beard on Oct 01, 2013
If the approach states ILS/DME then the DME is required from the final approach fix inbound.
There are some older approaches with older TERPS criteria that will state “DME REQUIRED” somewhere on the approach plate.
If DME is required on the transition routes or from the initial approach fix inbound there will be a note in the approach plate stating DME is required.

Just a point of clarification. It is the DME information that is required, not the DME unit. A “suitable RNAV system” may be used to determine aircraft position relative to a DME fix according to the AIM.
