    Airways below FL180 are protected 4NM on each side of the centerline between points. Flyover waypoints are primarily used on SIDs and STARs, which are not usually “on the airways.” If you’re letting your GPS and autopilot do the flying, it will not turn until over or abeam the point if it’s a flyover waypoint. If it’s a flyby waypoint, the FMS will use “turn anticipation” in order to align with the new leg as soon as possible after passing the waypoint.
    There is no published protected areas around a flyover, because ATC wants you to fly directly over it. There may be multiple arrivals and/or departures going on at the same time, and some run very close to the others. This being said, if you can’t make a flyover, inform ATC before they have a chance to ask you why you’re not over it.
