CFI add-on

Hi!  Potential student is dual-rated, commercial, but has not flown at all for a while.  I'm thinking a year or two.  He had an airplane CFI, but that expired in the 1980's.  Now he wants to start again with a helicopter CFI add-on.  The FAA has a written for this category, but I'm wondering what else would be required for the student as far as requirements and prep for the practical.

    The regulations require him to take the Helicopter Add-on written test (as you know), have the aeronautical knowledge necessary to pass the practical test and three hours of helicopter time in preparation of the practical test.

    It goes without saying that he must have a commercial helicopter rating as well.

    Jim,

    You didn’t mention if the applicant had recent experience flying helicopters. That would be a plus. He will need to log ground and flight training on the areas in 61.187(b)(3). He needs to log training time within 2 calendar months in preparation for the practical (no requirement for 3 hours of prep for a CFI).

    Also, note that passage of the practical test for the helicopter add-on will reinstate his airplane CFI as provided in 61.199 (a)(2).
