Does an SR 22 require any additional rating or endorsement?

I have a SEL. Can I jump into an SR 22 and start logging PIC time, or is some other training, rating, or endorsement required?

    The SR22 has more than 200 horsepower, so from 61.31f, you need a high-performance endorsement before you can act as PIC. However, if another, appropriately endorsed pilot (like a CFI or even just a friend) is along, then you can log PIC for any time you are manipulating the controls as you are rated in category/class.

    I’m not going to go into the whole discussion here, as it has been rehashed many times elsewhere, but if you google “acting vs logging PIC”, any of the first few results will explain the difference.

    Is a high performance endorsement a one-time shot?

    In other words, if I already have a check ride in say, a King Air, does that qualify as high performance moving forward and translate into flying any future 200+ horsepower aircraft?

    Yes, a high-performance endorsement is a one-time thing.

    However, to answer a question you didn’t ask, taking a checkride in a high-performance aircraft does not in itself count as the endorsement. The endorsement must be specifically signed off (as it should have been during the training for that checkride).

    ^ Hmm. I don’t believe it was endorsed. It was 1996 when I went through the Army fixed wing course. It included time in a 182 and A-90 with Flight Safety.

    I seem to remember seeing some rule about being grandfathered before August 4, 1997. Would the FWMEQC apply if I haven’t received an actual endorsement?

    14 CFR ยง 61.31 Type rating requirements, additional training, and authorization requirements.
    (f) Additional training required for operating high-performance airplanes.

    The training and endorsement required by paragraph (f)(1) of this section is not required if –

    (i) The person has logged flight time as pilot in command of a high-performance airplane, or in a full flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of a high-performance airplane prior to August 4, 1997; or

    If you’ll notice from 61.31f, there are two exceptions to the high-performance requirement.

    1) you’ve logged PIC time in such an airplane prior to 1997. Note it has to be PIC. Whether the flying you did in the course you took counted as PIC only you would know.
    2) You took a course that resulted in a 135.293 signoff. Although it might seem like this wouldn’t apply to an Army aviator, since you did the course at FlightSafety it’s possible they signed it off as a 135.293 check – you’d have to look in your records.
