Starting limitations

Why is there two types of limitations for starting a jet engine?  In the book I read there are starting duty cycle limitations and starting and motoring limitations.  What is the difference?

    One limitation is for battery cycles and one is for the starter.

    There are also other limitations related to the start including how cold soaked the battery is, how much wind from what direction, the internal temperatures, and the time allowed to reach a certain fan speed.

    Not sure why someone voted down KDS’s answer, so I voted it back up…

    For the Citation II, for which I just went through type rating school, the starter limitation is 3 starts in 30 minutes with 30 seconds between starts. The battery limitation is 3 starts in an hour.

    The main thing is heat. The starter limitation is for heating up the starter itself, the battery limitation is for battery heat.

    So, if you’re using a GPU, you can do 3 starts in 30 minutes with 30 seconds between them.

    But if you’re using the battery, you can only do 3 starts in an hour – it’s more restrictive due to battery overheating.

    About all I could add is that it’s not unheard of for pilots to lose their jobs as a result of just one bad engine start.
