Hi,

I stopped flying over 20 years ago and would like to start again, what I need to do to get reissued my license?

I have commercial pilot license & IFR issued from France & Libya, & I was flying King Air 200.

    In very general terms, you would either need a current foreign (France & Libya) license and apply for a US pilot certificate based on a foreign license OR go through the process that a US pilot would starting with the private pilot test. It’s not possible to obtain a US commercial certificate based upon a foreign license and the instrument rating has two paths (one where you just take a written test and one where you take a practical test). To continue on to a commercial certificate, you have to have the one that was obtained via the practical test route.

    The King Air 200 is not a type rated aircraft even though in military configuration it can be operated over 12,500 pounds. So, you would not need a type rating to go back to flying that type of airplane.

    The whole process of taking a foreign license and getting a US certificate with it is very confusing and if someone doesn’t work in that area on a frequent basis it’s a real struggle to understand. Hopefully you have a flight school near you that works with foreign pilots a lot. They will be knowledgeable on the details of what you need to do to achieve the level of certification you desire. Depending on where you live, the local FAA office may be very good at knowing the details or not so good.

    Given that your foreign license is likely expired and your medical certainly would be, I suspect the course of action for you would be to go through the US testing process. However, I’ll caveat that by saying I’m one of the ones who has to struggle with foreign license rules, so I’m far from the expert on the subject.
