Hello,

I am currently working on my instrument and then onto commercial. My intentions are to make it to an instructor. After I have completed my commercial requirements what are the requirements for a CFI certificate?

    If you’re wondering about any “hours” requirements or stuff like “300 mile XC”, there aren’t any of those other than what you will need for your Commercial checkride. Well there is the requirement for you to have flown at least 15 hours PIC in category and class, but that isn’t usually a problem (you already meet that, I’m sure).

    The requirements are: pass two knowledge tests, one on Fundamentals of Instruction and one a “regular” knowledge test like the others you’ve taken. Learn to teach on the ground. Learn to fly from the right seat and teach all the Private and Commercial maneuvers while you’re flying. Once you’re proficient at that and have your tests passed, that’s it as far as requirements – go schedule the checkride. At least part of it must be in a Complex airplane, like your Commercial (assuming we’re talking “Airplane” here and not helicopter or something else).

    I should have added – it’s all in 14 CFR Part 61, Subpart H, which you will become very familiar with.
