Is the knowledge test that's required by the FAR the test you take on the computer prior to the checkride or is it the ground Q&A with the DPE before the flying?

61.103 (d) for example.

    I would say both. The knowledge test referred to by the regulations is the test taken before the practical for which you receive a sheet of paper showing your score.

    However, that in and of itself, does not suffice. You cannot simply memorize the answers and pass the computer test and be done with it. You must show during the oral questioning, which takes place not only before the flight portion, but may continue during the flight portion, that you have the required knowledge.
